Oceti Sakowin Treaty Councils:
“A Call to Self-Sufficiency and Self-Sustainability.”
For Immediate Release | October 20, 2025
The statement calls on the Oyate to take concrete steps toward food sovereignty and economic self-reliance rooted in treaty rights and traditional trade systems—while adapting modern tools. Highlights include:

Tatanka Oyate (Bison) restoration: Every reservation establishes a bison range using a one-for-one formula (e.g., 10,000 members → 10,000 bison).

Food sovereignty from home to Nation: Greenhouses and gardens in each tiwahe, scaling to tribal supply chains and distribution systems.

Economic independence: Tribally chartered financial infrastructure; building our own supply and distribution networks.

Treaty enforcement: Upholding the Fort Laramie Treaties of 1851 and 1868, including the guarantee of lands “for the absolute and undisturbed use and occupation of the Indians herein named.”

Ending dependency: Calling out federal plenary power’s constraints and affirming inherent sovereignty to feed and sustain our people.

If you’re covering Native sovereignty, food systems, or treaty enforcement, we’d welcome your coverage and conversation.
