

The Seven Lakota Woope (Sacred Laws)
The Lakota Woope are sacred laws gifted to guide us in living in balance with ourselves, our relatives, and the world around us. They remind us how to walk a good life in connection with all of creation.
1. Wačántognaka — Generosity
To live with an open heart, giving freely of what we have — time, knowledge, goods, or spirit — without expecting anything in return.
3. Wóksape — Wisdom
To seek understanding and live by knowledge gained through experience, reflection, and the teachings of the elders.
5. Waúŋšila — Compassion
To live with empathy and kindness, feeling the suffering of others and acting to help relieve it.
7. Wahwáȟwala — Humility
To live with humility, knowing we are not above or below any other being, but part of a great circle of life.
2. Wóohitika — Courage
To live bravely, facing life’s challenges with strength, honesty, and integrity, even when it is difficult.
4. Wowacíŋtȟaŋka — Patience
To live with endurance and self-control, waiting with understanding, and accepting that all things unfold in their own time.
6. Wóohola — Respect
To live with respect for all beings — people, animals, plants, water, earth, and spirit — honoring the sacredness within all of creation.
